PowerQuest(R) DataKeeper(TM) Version 5.0 See the DataKeeper online help or Chapter 9 of the PartitionMagic user guide for full information about PowerQuest DataKeeper. Table of Contents ================= 1. Known Issues 2. Interaction with Other Programs 1. Known Issues =============== a. To install DataKeeper under Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Windows XP, you must have administrator privileges. b. "Permission denied" errors may occur if you try to restore files to their original location when the original file exists and is open. Windows system files are often open and beyond your control. c. The directory tree will collapse back to the root directory when refreshing the list if you do not have the last folder in the expanded tree highlighted. d. Datakeeper can be uninstalled as you would uninstall other programs. However, the uninstall process leaves all the backup specification files (.DKS) and log files. To remove them, complete a search by typing "*.DKS" in the Named text box. When you remove DataKeeper, you can delete those files (they are large and occupy a lot of space). If you use multiple primary and substitute backup locations, they may contain obsolete backup files that you may want to delete to reclaim disk space. 2. Interaction with other programs ================================== To prevent performance degradation of your system when monitoring, DataKeeper does two things: Delay write -- When a file is modified, DataKeeper delays making a backup for five seconds. This prevents hard disk "thrashing" caused by applications that write groups of data to a file with many short pauses between them. If DataKeeper tried to copy the file immediately after every write, the copy would be in progress during the next write and the copying process would have to start over. File system load monitoring -- To avoid slowing down your system, DataKeeper monitors file system activity and waits for periods of inactivity to back up files. Simultaneously running programs that continuously scan the disk may cause DataKeeper to delay copying files for an excessive length of time. If you notice hard disk thrashing or suspect that an extended delayed write situation exists, you can stop monitoring in DataKeeper and it will report the number of files that are waiting to be backed up (if any). If you consistently have a large number of files waiting to be backed up, especially when Windows is shutting down, try to determine what applications (such as disk optimizing tools and virus scanners) are conflicting with DataKeeper. You should consider scheduling them to run when you are not actively using the system. ============================================================== PowerQuest can be reached at: Voice: 801-437-8900 Fax: 801-226-8941 Web site: www.powerquest.com Copyright 1999-2002 PowerQuest Corporation.
